The Department of Defense organized the first America Supports You FREEDOM WALK in 2005 as a tribute to the Pentagon victims and their families, Pentagon employees and volunteers who were there to help on September 11, and for our men and women in the military.
This year marks the fifth anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. We are hopeful that every state will conduct a FREEDOM WALK, which will begin an important tradition in our country of commemorating 9-11 and also highlighting the importance and cost of Freedom.
The America Supports You FREEDOM WALK is an event that allows citizens the opportunity to remember the victims of September 11, honor our American servicemen and women, past and present, and commemorate our freedom.
The America Supports You FREEDOM WALK is a commemorative event – it is about Remembrance, Reflection, Recommitment and Respect.
- Remembrance of the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the Pentagon, the Twin Towers and flight 93 over Pennsylvania;
- Reflection on the tragedy of that day and the events that unfolded from it;
- Recommitment to the ideals of Freedom that epitomize our nation and our promise to “Never Forget”;
- Respect and support for the many American men and women in uniform past and present who protect the freedoms the walk is commemorating.
About America Supports You (ASY): ASY is a nationwide program launched by the Department of Defense (DoD) to recognize citizens' support for our military men and women and communicate that support to members of our Armed Forces at home and abroad.
